Wine, beer and drinks

Wine and beer are made from plants, but some are cleared ("fined") with animal products like isinglass (fish), egg white or gelatine. None of it stays visible, and it isn't on the label as an ingredient.

How to check

1. Look at the back label. Many say "suitable for vegans".
2. Not sure? Search the drink on Barnivore, a free directory of vegan beer, wine and spirits.

Everyday drinks

• Tea and coffee: fine. Use oat or soya drink — see swaps.
• Hot chocolate: many contain milk powder. Check the bold allergens.
• Fizzy drinks: almost all fine. A few red ones use carmine (E120).
